Using mediation to facilitate review of service costs

We have been working with one of the most financially challenged health systems in the Midlands to help them deal with a raft of legacy cost and patient pathway issues. These range from uncosted community services dating back to the Transforming Community Services initiative in 2011 through to new pathways which need to be introduced to improve the patient experience and reduce waiting times.

We have used the mediation approach pioneered by CEDR. This involves a series of workshops to discuss each issue, establish common ground and points of disagreement and then propose solutions that all the stakeholders can feel comfortable signing off. We provide technical advice, facilitate discussion and propose options where required.

As a result, contracts and business cases have been signed off. These offer clarity going forward, so that any deviations from plan can be surfaced quickly and further mediation organised if needed to deal with new challenges.
